![]() ![]() This novel follows Lydia Bird’s self-reflection and growth handling a change thrust upon her, her family, and her friends. Lydia desperately wants to return to the life with her boyfriend, but she forgets that with each decision, no matter how small, we are all growing and changing. We may not realize our defining moment, but looking back upon that fateful event, we often keep replaying the scenario and wondering “what if …” things were different. Lydia bounces between these two worlds for over a year, and we feel her struggle with decisions in each life. ![]() But both timelines continue on their own trajectories, and different events steer the storylines farther and farther apart. ![]() Is the option with the boyfriend a dream, an alternate universe, or a psychotropic mechanism? As readers, we are never sure. She is given the choice of continuing two different streams of her life though: one with her boyfriend alive and the other without. ![]() The defining moment for Lydia Bird is the death of her boyfriend, when she is just 28 years old. What are the defining moments of our lives? Can we return to who we were before? Do the events around us continue to change us, even if we do not want them to change us?
